Bio

anonymous b. (a.k.a. Blair Barkley) is a Winnipeg based artist who studied at University of Manitoba in School of Fine Arts, graduating with an Honours Double Major Degree in both photography and painting. The pseudonym anonymous b. is a commentary on how a city ignores their local talent. By bringing attention to local artists and promoting their work and shows whenever possible, anonymous b. hopes that people will begin to give the same attention to their poets, authors, actors, modern dancers, directors and painters as they do for their athletes. Winnipeg and Manitoba abroad, have some of the most talented and creative artists in Canada, but many Winnipeg'ers do not know their names or follow their careers until they get recognition aboard - they are anonymous - anonymous b. hopes to be part of this change.

Though his work ranges from text sculptures to abstract painting, minimalism and strong compositions are binding stylistic approaches in every series or project the artist pursues, holding his work together under these two sensibilities and themes.

Artist Statement

Currently anonymous b. has sided his idea called Perpetual Disfunction, a series dealing with the plethora of problems caused by our inexhaustible consumerist culture, to focus on a series of new paintings that have brought him back to his love of mark-making, and the raw energy of putting paint to a canvas. In university he was inspired most by colour field painters of the 50's, 60's and 70's era's. The large scale paintings he is working on now are bringing him back to "where he belongs", and he is finding new inspiration by focusing on what he loves most - large canvases of colour and shape - which he believes is the epitome of painting itself! With large minimalistic paintings of gradients and shapes the artist hopes the viewer will enter into and experience this work, making space and time for contemplation and introspection. He believes the more time we take to think about who we are and our world, the better we can approach and live life the way we were meant too - with compassion and love. Without introspection and contemplation there is no room for understanding of the other or the capacity to show love. These colour field paintings are the artist's reflections on these sentiments.
